Shoreline litter is more than just an unsightly nuisance.

Picture a shoreline with wrappers strewn about, pop cans rattling in the wind, broken glass and cigarette butts everywhere you step. This eyesore is only one negative impact that shoreline litter has on people. It also poses risks to our safety and raises economic concerns.

Safety concerns

Not all litter is easy to spot.  Sharp items like glass, metal and plastic can stay hidden and cause injury to the unsuspecting person. Some items may also spread disease or even leach chemicals into our drinking water. Cigarettes butts are the most prevalent item and these contain cellulose acetate fibers that take many years to break down. All the while they are emitting harmful toxins into our freshwater and ocean waterways. Electronic waste can also leach chemicals when not disposed of properly.

Influence on Economy

The tourism industry promotes beautiful public spaces as one way to bring in visitors, and the degradation of shorelines can cause a loss of revenue for the industry while diminishing civic pride. The fishing industry can also be impacted economically through the dangers of ghost fishing. The negative impact this has on the sustainability of aquatic wildlife means a less profitable industry.
